Account Chocula

Now that Leslie and I are mostly settled in Chattanooga with tax season fast approaching we are looking for a local small business/personal accountant.

Do the native ‘noogans in the audience have any good recommendation for design business-savvy accountants? (We’re in the process of dissolving our Maryland-based businesses and reopening them in Tennessee so experience incorporating is a big plus.)

Unfortunately, I don’t have any CPAs to recommend, but for setting up a business, I’ve been very happy with The Company Corporation (which has been in business since 1899). The funny thing is that lawyers and accountants will often use their services to do their dirty work because it’s so easy. You just call up their 800 number and they do everything for you.

Another option, if you are happy with your old accountant, is that you may want to consider leaving your business in Maryland and just using The Company Corporation as your registered agent in that state (another service they provide). Sometimes there isn’t really any benefit to moving your business to your current state (unless that’s where the majority of your business is). It all depends on the laws of each state and how much tax you owe to the state you are in. Again, it can’t hurt to call their number and ask them for their advice, I’ve always found them to be very helpful.

Thanks guys, I’ll be following up via email. I wonder if this post would have gotten more responses without an oats-and-marshmellow inspired title? ;)
