Shaun Inman of the Dead

Being dead, I can’t possibly be as eloquent as Stan in belatedly welcoming the season—but I can get just as messy. Believe them when they say, “Nothing bleeds like a <head>-wound.” (I forgot to mention that if you are viewing the this in IE PC, you’re missing out. Download a real browser for the full effect—what’s the matter, scared?)

Unrelated addendum

  • There is now a feed available for my homepage link-list, Common Interests (so now you never have a reason to visit the site).
  • I’ve been working on ShortStat again. I’m doing a complete rewrite including: normalizing the database, making major refinements to the interface, adding a control/preference panel as well as a slew of features suggested by the community and my own late-night ruminations.
  • I should be wrapping up a couple of projects that have been in the pipeline for a while—very excited about those.
  • I purchased my ticket to SXSW 2005.

So I guess despite what Google (and Jason) would have you believe, I’m not quite dead yet.

Oh right, the ‘new look’ is only on the homepage :) It really does look nice indeed.

As for Shortstat, this means I’ll wait with anymore tweaking of it until the new version is out. Can you give us a hint as to what features are going to be added? Are IP/self filtering and latest IP’s in? Any PHP/SWF charts (http://www.maani.us/charts/index.php) ?

Whatever they might be, I know you won’t screw up…right? :P

Akaxaka, that’s a sweet little utility. Not sure if that will make it into ShortStat though. Shortstat is more about which sites you’re connected to, I’m not as interested in pure statistical charts and graphs. This is the same reason I don’t plan on adding recent IPs. Looking at IPs for visitors feels impersonal to me—even if it’s mapped back to a general provider domain. Besides there are much more robust packages that deal with that.

There will be IP and Referrer blocking though. I don’t want to say too much more about what will be included. I’m a fan of under-promise, over-deliver.

Glad you got my humor Scott.

Tulip, not sure what you mean about the photo. I took that shot myself while staying at The Standard on Sunset Boulevard this past summer.

The blood here seems much more fresh than Stan’s, as if you were shot only minutes ago. Whereas “Stan” seems to be working with blood that’s been drying since last October.

Both fun, and sort of sick, and strangely pretty.

Fantastic! I can’t wait for the new version of Shortstat :D It’s already great, but that database sure does bloat once you’ve had some decent hits. Keep up the great work shaun.

A few people have emailed to ask how the blood effect was achieved. No, it wasn’t a PotatoChop filter. I refer you again to Stan, purveyor of fine stains. The blood on my site is actually from Jason’s B-roll. I’m like a DVD extra! Jason, stop talking over my dialogue!

Bwa ha ha ha, you owe everything to me! Er… except for the things you helped me with before… hmmm… maybe I owe you a bit. Need any more blood? I could be persuaded to part with other bodily fluids.

JohnyB: Who the hell do you expect to clean now the site…? Hmmm, it does say “clean-up in version 7” in the header on the homepage… What version is this site on atm? :D

Very cool effect - makes me think of the scene in American Beauty where Lester is shot and the blood is splattered over the wall.
