One Day
Written around February 1999
This song was written my sophomore year of college. For some reason I never recorded a definitive version of One Day—until now there’s only been the low-quality, analogue recording of it’s live debut at the SCAD Battle of the Bands in the spring of ’99. I had only penned the tune two days prior and had yet to work out all the vocal kinks. But the audience was generous and I walked away with First Place Solo Performer.
I’ve been revisiting a lot of my older material lately and reflecting on past creative angst—see Casual Despair (Heavy). I’ve always liked the energy of this song, the coarseness of my voice and the obvious truth of “bitchin’ won’t change a thing.”
I wrote this song sitting on a black leather love seat that my roommate’s girlfriend had scored from someone else’s trash. The original owners had tossed it because the left cushion had worn completely through exposing rusted coils and tufts of filler—hence the “hole in the love seat” line which also expressed my lack of success with the ladies that year. And the bit about “broken wings” came from a life-size pair of Bristol board paper wings created earlier that year for my Three-Dimensional Design final that lay in disrepair in the corner.
Not the cheeriest of efforts but at least it ends on a positive notion.
I don’t wait for my false teeth to come in
Brief smiles, they don’t mean a thingThere’s a hole in the
loveseat beside where I sit
A pair of broken wings speaks so much more than any of thisI know bitchin’ won’t change a thing
One day up
Next day down
Next day down
Next day downCall me what you will I’m not content
You don’t call me since I went awayAnd I know bitchin’ won’t change a thing
I know that I don’t mean a thing to youOne day up
Next day down
Next day down
Next day downI feel so beaten
I feel so beaten
I feel so beaten downI know bitchin’ won’t change a thing
But I know that I want to changeOne day up
Next day down
The next day
One day I’ll never be down.

You’ve done a really good job with all your music. I like just about every song here. For some reason I really like this one though.
